I'm not so good at the photo-shopping either, if you look at mine all the lines on the characters are too thick and I've only just got the hang of layering. using the layers, you probably could have got that lens flare just over the scythe (is that even what it's called??)
And yeah, I would have done the background over the top of the flare. But otherwise, great idea using a flare to get the shine. Good job =]
